Valentina Kozlova Dance Conservatory Spring Gala 2013 - Peter Norton Symphony Space - April 20, 2013 : Founded in 2003 by former Bolshoi and New York City principal ballet dancer, Valentina Kozlova, the Valentina Kozlova Dance Conservatory of New York provides dance instruction and pre-professional training based on traditional Russian technique and George Balanchine's rapid footwork. The school prepares students for a career in dance. Students of the school have received top awards at several national and international ballet competitions, including the Youth America Grand Prix and International Ballet Competition-Varna. The Dance Conservatory Performance Project (DCPP), started in 2004, is a non-profit organization created and directed by Valentina Kozlova. Its mission is to foster classical dance and disseminate education, both as a traditional art form and an evolving performing art form. Through classroom work, scholarships, performance presentations, the commissioning of new works, and its newest initiative, the Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Compeition, DCPP strives to nurture, educate and promote budding artists. DCPP is the proud presenter of Valentina Kozlova Dance Concervatory of New York students in performances of The Nutcracker and the Annual Spring Gala. DCPP also produces the Valentina Kozlova International Ballet competition. After two successful editions in Boston, Boston International Ballet Competition has moved to NYC and been renamed Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition. "100 Years of Flamenco in New York" pays tribute to the legacy of Spanish and American dance artists and to the role of the city in shaping Flamenco into modern art. Dance troupe Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana was founded in 1983 by Carlota Santana and Roberto Lorca as Spanish Dance Arts Company. After Mr. Lorca's untimely death in 1987, Ms. Santana continued the company. Bookings Dance Festival APAP Showcase - The Allen Room - Jazz at Lincoln Center - January 11, 2013 : Producing agency Jodi Kaplan & Associates/Booking Dance presented a showcase of dance companies from around the company as part of the APAP showcase series. Jodi Kaplan & Associates/Booking Dance is a personal "boutique angecy" that books dance companies on extensive tours throughout the U.S. and internationally. The Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) produces an annual conference in NYC to bring together performing arts companies and presenters. As part of the conference, there are over 1,000 showcases where presenters can view live performances. The Bookings Dance Festival presented 27 dance companies over six hours at The Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Images are from a few of the performances.

Charlotte's Song - LaGuardia Performing Arts Center - December 6, 2012 : "Charlotte's Song" opened on December 7, 2012 at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center. It was presented as a work in progress as part of the LaGuardia Lab 101 Residency Program. Conceived and written by Nancy Ferragallo. Directed by Andreas Robertz and Mario Golden. Music by Luciano Berio, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich. Featuring: Celeste Hastings as the Other, Lucy McMichael as the Mother, and Yvette Quintero as Charlotte. The work is described as a poetic, "tanztheater" play. It explores a daughter’s reality of growing up with her schizophrenic mother and how that impacted her life. Through the lens of fragmented narratives, letters, movement sequences, and shifting auditory landscapes, we hear the language of disconnect that announces the underlying fragility of the mother; both her physical and mental collapse. The symbolic figure of a doll provides the emotional link between mother and daughter while the role of narrator shifts between the central characters. The Nutcracker Ballet - New York Theatre Ballet - November 28, 2012 : New York Theatre Ballet's "The Nutcracker Ballet" which premiered as a new production in 2011, had its second successful run during the 2012 holiday season.The one-hour visually stunning ballet is well-suited for children. Keith Michael's previous production of "The Nutcracker" had been presented annually from 1985 to 2010. In 2011, choreographer Keith Michael, costume designer Sylvia Taalsohn Nolan, set designer Gillian Bradshaw-Smith and lighting designer Ted Smith re-envisioned the story, dancing and style for a 1907 Art Nouveau look. Choreographer Keith Michael says "At the center, one of Drosselmeyers's clocks symbolizes the magical world waiting to unfold between the everyday ticks of time. . . I wanted Marie, the protagonist of the tale, to have a splendid romance now, not later whe she was "of age" as in the original story. So Marie, rather than a little girl, is now an amalgam of Shakespeare's Juliet and the clairvoyant Beverly Penn from Mark Helprin's "Winter's Tale". And Drosselmeyer's nephew (named him Nathaniel) transforms from Marie's real world crush to the amorous apparition of The Nutcracker Prince. "The Nutcracker Ballet" delighted audiences and critics. Dance critic Alastair Macaulay of the NY Times wrote "Keith Michael’s new version for New York Theater Ballet, playing the story without intermission and cutting at least two of its most famous musical sections (the solo dance of the Toy Soldiers and the Sugar Plum Fairy variation), is a chamber version that succeeds often remarkably. The party scene features only five characters: the Stahlbaum parents and their daughter, Marie; Drosselmeyer and his nephew, Nathaniel. It succeeds — just — because it takes on qualities of ritual and pattern; it’s the least realistic party scene I’ve ever watched. The major classical dances of Act II could use more sense of ritual, though, and the first pas de deux for Marie and Nathaniel, set to the cosmically huge transformation music that precedes the snow scene, is emotionally overblown. Yet the production has sweetness, fun and intimacy. Although I’ve seen other productions feature a Marzipan Shepherdess with dancing sheep in Act II, this one, with the tiniest child who goes on dancing for the audience until the last possible moment, is especially irresistible." Heritage Sunday Celebrating Haiti - Lincoln Center Out of Doors - Hearst Plaza - August 5, 2012 : Ayiti Rasanble! (“Haiti, come together!”) celebrates the indomitable spirit of the Caribbean nation with dance and musical groups reflecting its resilience and pride. Feet of Rhythm Afro-Haitian Dance Company works to preserve traditional dance forms under the vision of founder Nadia Dieudonné, the dancer and choreographer best known for her infectious interpretations of banda, the dance of Ghede, the revered Haitian spiritual figure of the underworld. Founded by Öneza Lafontant, a native of Bakonwa, Haiti, Kongo’s music represents vodou, the spiritual fabric of Haiti, and perpetuates its message of love, truth, and justice through drumming and song. Master dancer and Tamboula d’Haiti artistic director Peniel Guerrier joins Kongo in an expression of folkloric footwork. Named after an 18th century revolutionary mystic, La Troupe Makandal channels the power of traditional Afro-Haitian music and dance in tribute to their late artistic director, master drummer and NEA National Heritage Fellow Frisner Augustin, who passed away suddenly this March. The exciting and political Raram blends the traditional rara horns and drums of bann a pye (band on foot) carnival music. Kimmo Pohjonen & Helsinki Nelson: Accordion Wrestling - Lincoln Center Out of Doors - Damrosch Park - August 3/4, 2012 : Kimmo Pohjonen and Helsinki Nelson present a dance theater work in which an accordion accompanies Olympic wrestling. The long forgotten tradition began in the 1920s then faded into obscurity as amplified music gained popularity. Accordionists frequently played during wrestling matches in Finland. In those days, local newspapers would carry a printed advertisement for the wrestling match listing the names of the wrestlers, the referee and the accordionist. Then, the accordionist was considered nothing less than a star, equal in stature and fame to the wrestlers.The purpose of including the accordionist's name in the newspaper ads was not only because of the player's drawing power, but also to lure younger crowds to matches, adding a more lively, social atmosphere to the events. After the matches, there would be formal social gatherings, with the accordionist playing dance tunes. With the accordion, the wrestling match became as much a social event as sport. This work re-imagines this tradition in today's sports world. Many of the movements and dances are based on actual wrestling holds and maneuvers, as well as pre-match warm-ups and practices, taking the audiences behind the scenes in what is rarely witnessed by outsiders. Pohjonen performs while grapplers struggle on a custom-made mat embedded with microphones. His work, with choreography by Ari Numminen, comments on Cold War and gender politics while lending a modern artistic twist to a classic Olympic competition. The collaboration of Finnish accordion and Olympic wrtestling creates a performance that both opens a window to the past, showing what these events may have been like and offers a vision of how it might have evolved had it not disappeared.

Tara O'Con's Underneath Where We Are - River to River Festival, 77 Water Street - July 8, 2012 : Tara O'Con's "Underneath Where We Are" was presented as part of the 2012 River to River Festival. The piece premiered at The Chocolate Factory in December 2010. It was created and directed by Tara O’Con in collaboration with Jodi Bender and Meg Madorin. Light Design by Chloe Z. Brown and Sound Design by Jason Sebastian. Jodi Bender and Meg Madorin danced the roles at the premiere. A subtle and understated movement piece for two dancers and ambient soundscore, "Underneath Where We Are" is a sensory, tactile, meditative, and obsessive exploration of the body's relationship to the space it inhabits. Unlike the barren Chocolate Factory stage, the performance in lower Manhattan as part of the River to River festival is held in a beautiful plaza with natural and indoor lighting, artwork, and tiered levels. The work has been expertly restaged to feature the designs in the plaza. The two dancers start together on the floor and move in tandem throughout the space. Their most intense encounters occur against a granite textured wall. It is up to the audience to decide the relationship between the two women. After the tense wall duet, they move apart with angst and begin to dance solos. Eventually, they reunite amid beautiful circular glass sculptures. In a refreshing change, the dancers often present their backs to the audience, which makes their thoughtful meanderings more mysterious and compelling. The River to River shows were performed by Tara O'Con and Jodi Bender. After graduating with a degree in dance, Tara O'Con has established herself both as a promising choreographer, and accomplished freelance dance artist. O’Con’s work has been presented at Dixon Place, The Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Wow Café Theater, and Dancenownyc. After moving to New York in 1995, she danced for several influential choreographers including Jeremy Nelson, Wil Swanson, Maria Hassabi, Chameckilerner and John Jasperse and collaborated with choreographer Levi Gonzalez. Since 2002, she has done independent work. Luciana Achugar has received numerous awards and grants including the Bessie award. Her piece “FEELingpleasuresatisfactioncelebrationholyFORM”, known commonly as "FEEL...FORM premiered at the Abrons Arts Center in May 2012. In his July 2, 2012 review, New York Times dance critic Alastair Macaulay described the piece as follows."They began by placing bluejeans on their heads, like hats. Then they inched with crossed-over pigeon toes toward one another. Meeting in the center, they bent and let the jeans drop to the floor. ... The women kicked and toed around until, by leg motion alone, they got the jeans all the way up their legs. None of them were sylphs; the two larger women were best at getting the jeans up over their hips. All four then rolled on the ground, like fish in the bottom of a boat, or autumn leaves, to and fro, for a long period. Beth Gill's Electric Midwife - River to River Festival Pier 15 - June 30/July 1, 2012 : "Electric Midwife" by choreographer Beth Gill was performed on Pier 15 (near the South Street Seaport) as part of the River to River 2012 Festival, "Electric Midwife" is choreographer Beth Gill's most recent work that premiered in 201. It received multiple Bessie awards, and continues to be performed both nationally and internationally. Originally performed in the intimate confines of The Chocolate Factory Theater, each performance on Pier 15 took place at dusk with the backdrop of sunset as a natural light source for the dance in the open air surrounded by water. The dance is performed to a live sound score by Bessie-award winning composer Jon Moniaci, The work is danced by: Danielle Goldman, Jennifer Lafferty, Marilyn Maywald, Nicole Mannarino, Anna Carapetyan , and Rebecca Warner Choreographer Beth Gill's "Electric Midwife" offers six women broken into two trios. The trios perform the same movements, using opposite limbs so they appear to be mirror images. The piece begins slowly and quickens toward the end. It is a formal minimalist structure of symmetry. In his July 2, 2012 review, New York Times dance critic Alastair Macaulay wrote "The six women, in rehearsal dancewear forming a motley array of soft and bright colors, maintained constant mirror symmetry and precise — though changing — stage geometries. A few movement motifs were steadily recycled, but they also evolved, bringing new motifs into the mix. The three women on the right never crossed over to the left, or vice versa. Gradually the choreography advanced into the foreground of the square stage area. At the end the dancers departed, two by two."

Maria Hassabi's Show - River to River Festival, NYC Stock Exchange - June 30/July 1, 2012 : Maria Hassabi's "Show" was performed three times in open air at Wall and Broad streets across from the New York Stock Exchange. The Maria Hassabi "Show" was part of the 2012 River to River Festival. Maria Hassabi's "Show", which premiered at The Kitchen in November 2011, explores the relationship between the audience and performers, their mutually assigned spaces, their movement and roles. For the 2012 River To River Festival, Hassabi extends "Show" exploration further by staging it in a public space. Existing beyond the frame of the theater, new parameters of performance emerged as "Show" was set within the conditions of the open air, open to passersby and other variants. At Broad and Wall Street. Movements are subtle and slow.  The performance was mesmerizing. It was impossible to divert your gaze from the two performers whose subtle body shifts presented the body in unique sculptural arrays. Whether it was curving the arm, straightening the arm, sloping the shoulder, arching the back - the small nuances showcased the body as art. Vangeline Theater Butoh Performance - HOWL Festival - Tompkins Square Park - June 2, 2012 : The Vangeline Theater is a New York-based dance company rooted in the foundation of Japanese butoh. The Company's work reflects French, Japanese and European culture. The Vangeline Theater strives to introduce Japanese butoh dance and newer contemporary forms of butoh to the public. By exposing the public to theatrical arts and other art forms, the Company hopes to enrich people's lives. The Company tours around the world and offers classes to performers and the public. The Vangeline Theater was founded in 2002 by Japanese Butoh artist Vangeline, who moved to the U.S. from France in 1993. Vangeline studies extensively with Butoh Masters teachers; Diego Pinon of the Butoh ritual Mexicano Center, Tetsuro Fukuhara, Daisuke Yoshimoto, Katsura Kan, Yumiko Yoshioka, Ko Murobushi, and Yoshito Ohno from Japan. At the 2012 HOWL Festival in New York City, The Vangeline Theater premiered "Raft of the Medusa", an ensemble Butoh piece inspired by the 1818/1819 oil painting by French painter Theodore Gericault that hangs in the Louvre. The painting depicts the plight of 150 people set adrift in a hurriedly constructed raft after the wreck of the French naval frigate Meduse. All but 15 died in the 13 days before their rescue, and those who survived endured starvation, dehydration, cannibalism and madness. The buthoh work was choreographed and directed by Vangeline for the Vangeline Theater. It featured dancers Shiho Tanaka , Maiko Ikegaki, Azumi Oe, Keiko Hashimoto, Juri Nishio, Margherita Tisato, Stacy Lynn Smith, Pamela Herron, Sindy Butz, Beatrice Schleyer, Luca Nicora, Prasida and Laura Oriol. Shot of Scotch - Scottish Highland Dancing - Lincoln Center - April 7, 2012 : Shot of Scotch was formed in February of 2011 as a venue for experienced, premier-level competitive Scottish highland dancers to continue to dance with the high level of precision and technique that they have trained many years to achieve. Most members of Shot of Scotch are adult “transplants” to the New York City area who did not want to leave Scottish Highland dancing behind when they relocated from Scotland to New York City. In honor of Tartan Day (April 6), the annual celebration of Scottish heritage, the David Rubenstein Atrium came alive on April 7 with the fancy footwork of Shot of Scotch dancers and musicians in a fun-filled show for the whole family. Featuring some of the world’s premier Scottish highland dancers, the group Shot of Scotch is committed to keeping highland dancing in the public eye with innovative performances showcasing both traditional dances and modern choreography. Shot of Scotch members, including some who are qualified teachers with the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dance, performed some of the basics before inviting the audience to join in on some quick-stepping Scottish flings. The April 7, 2012 performance was Shot of Scotch's debut at Lincoln Center. On April 14, 2012, the group particpated in the Tartan Day Parade on Avenue of the Americas in New York. And Drosselmeyer's nephew (named him Nathaniel) transforms from Marie's real world crush to the amorous apparition of The Nutcracker Prince. Eiko & Koma - Lincoln Center Out of Doors - July 27, 2011 : Eiko & Koma perform "Water" at Lincoln Center Out of Doors 2011. Eikon & Koma : "Water has been one of the most important and frequent elements in our work. For "Elegy" (1984) we created two shallow pools of water on stage, one for each of us. . In "Thirst" 1985 we damced our thirst for water and intimacy. For Passages (1989), the entire theater floor was flooded with water, which also oozed down the back wall and dropped from many spots overhead. We performed in our outdoor work "River" in eleven different bodies of water, including a lake, a pond and a fountain. For the proscenium version of "River", we constructed a shallow river on stage on the shore of which Kronos Quartet played.Somei Saton's commissioned full-evening score live. In creating and performing "Water" we "remember" these pieces, our movements, different waters, and our desire to repeatedly submerge ourselves in water. In this most urban landscape of midtown Manhattan, we also intend to remember and imagine the ancient water all living things came from and each us was born from. Finally, many recent disasters remind us that water's seeming calm is illusory."

Third Rail Projects: Looking Glass - July 12, 13, 14, 2011 : Third Rail Projects performance of "Looking Glass" - July 2011, NYC. Arts Brookfield presented "Looking Glass", an immersive, sophisticated, bold and visually stunning reimagining of Lewis Carroll's "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass". Created by New York City’s Bessie Award-winning performance company Third Rail Projects, "Looking Glass" was a site-specific dance performance event that inhabited the gardens, plazas, and public areas of Bank of America Plaza in downtown Los Angeles from June 23-25, 2011 and One New York Plaza, Zuccotti Park and World Financial Center in lower Manhattan from July 12-14, 2011. Programmed on a 30-minute loop for a two-hour period, audiences could come and go to the free performances, explore the gardens, watch short sections, or picnic and watch as a visually mesmerizing and lushly choreographed experience unfolded all around them. "Looking Glass" is the first iteration of a multi-year project, which reimagines the works of Lewis Carroll. In 2011, the work was performed as a series of public, site-specific shows in Los Angeles, and New York. A full production, a completely immersive performance experience, is slated for spring 2012. "Looking Glass" cast: Elizabeth Carena as the Mad Hatter, Tara O'Con and Marissa Nielsen-Pincus as the two Alices, Tom Pearson as the White Rabbit, Tori Sparks as the Red Queen, and Jeninne Willett as the White Queen. The gallery displays images from the three New York July performances. Marsi Burns Improvisational Performance to Artwork of Joyce Ellen Weinstein - Ceres Gallery - January 15, 2011 : On January 15, 2011, Marsi Burns presented an improvisational performance responding with dance and movement to feelings evoked by Joyce Ellen Weinstein's "Denial" art at the Ceres Gallery in Chelsea, NYC Marsi Burns is a performing artist specializing in improvisations. Ms. Burns is sometimes known as "MARSI In The MOMENT" or "Marsi Burns Dancing In The MOMENT". On January 15, she responded with movement to the "Denial" art of Joyce Ellen Weinstein, accompanied by world jazz flutist, Mark Weinstein. Artist Joyce Ellen Weinstein has created an extensive and varied body of work. Her "Denial" prints were exhibited in January 2011 at the Ceres Gallery. Discussing her "Denial" prints, Ms. Weinstein said, "During a residency at Europos Parkas Open Air Museum of the Center of Europe in Vilnius, Lithuania, I observed a group of employees from a local furniture factory practicing trusting and bonding exercises. Some people were blindfolded and others walked on tight ropes attached high up on the trees. I took many photographs documenting this activity. Later when I looked at the photos, I found the imagery very startling, intriguing, mysterious and ominous, lending them to interpretations related to the human condition. I reinterpreted these images into the series of silk screen/linoleum block prints I call Denial" Jazz flutist Mark Weinstein plays World Jazz and Straight-Ahead with world-class musicians rooted in Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, African, Jewish and Indian traditions.
