Ballets with a Twist - Downtown Dance Festival - August 13, 2011 : New York-based Ballets with a Twist performs offbeat, innovative dances rooted in classical ballet. Founded by choreographer Marilyn Klaus, the Company's pieces mirror many influences including Isadora Duncan and Busby Berkeley. The New York Times has written "Eye-catching imagery abounded in Ballets with a Twist...witty and fantastic." The Company presents "Absinthe" (Prelude) and "White Russian", excerpts from their dance suite Cocktail Hour, a collection of dances that bring a cocktail bar menu to life. BALAM Dance Theatre - Downtown Dance Festival - August 13 & 19, 2011 : BALAM Dance Theatre fuses Balinese theatre with ballet, modern and diverse cultural movement from around the world. BALAM was founded in 1979 by Islene Pinder to educate the public about Bali's culture and dance. Under the directorship of Spanish/Italian/Mexican choreographer Carlos Fittante, BALAM's fusion repertoire has expanded to include ballet, Spanish, Lester Horton, Baroque, Belly Dance, Latin, hip-hop, drag, Noh, yoga and karate movement styles. The Company provides a professional environment for young people that both challenges and encourages them to excel. Dancewave works with internationally renown choreographers and has performed works by Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp, Trisha Brown, Mark Morris, Garth Fagan, David Dorfman, Bill T. Silesian Dance Theatre - Downtown Dance Festival - August 13 & 18, 2011 : Silesian Dance Theatre is Poland's first professional contemporary dance company founded in 1991 by Artistic Director and choreographer Jacek Luminski. The Company has performed in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
