Battery Dance Company - Downtown Dance Festival - August 15, 2010 : The Battery Dance Company was founded in 1976 in lower Manhattan, The Company continues its mission of enriching the culture of New York and serving as ambassadors of cultural enlightenment worldwide. In addition to its performance schedule, Battery Dance Company dancers reach out to schools and other organizations in efforts to showcase dance to many New Yorkers and those overseas. For the New York dance community, the Company provides affordable studio space in its Tribeca home. The Battery Dance Company organizes and hosts the Downtown Dance Festival and has presented over 100 dance companies in its 28 years. binbinFactory - Downtown Dance Festival - August 15, 2010 : binbinfactory is the artisitc vision of Satoshi Haga and Rie Fukuzawa to harmonize movement of the East and West and through collaboration with international artists. They have worked in both traditonal and non-traditional venues and forge a unique vision in modern dance movement. They perform "Untitled". Inspired by Tai Chi’s “Push Hand” technique, the dancers move with just their fingertips touching, their arms flowing softly like a piece of rope, forming different shapes as they dance, creating unspoken conversation between them. Using the forces of gravity and human personality, they pursue the course of human relationships and love between men and women (or man and man, woman and woman), illustrating the power of Yin and Yang theory in the universe. Guru Radha Mohanan & Troupe - Downtown Dance Festival - August 15, 2010 : Kathakali Kathakali is a classical Indian dance-drama form noted for its color saturated make-up and elaborate costumes. The dramas are ancient stories of love and war from epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, which are re-lived and portrayed for their emotional and philosophic meanings. The dance dramas are based on performance traditions that trace back to the 16th century from what is now known as India’s southern state of Kerala The stories are conveyed through a language of sounds, colors, enlarged facial and hand gestures, and action. The troupe performs "Dussasana Vadham" (excerpt) This episode from the epic tale of Mahabharata is a tale of war, strategy and retaliation sought by a woman for her humiliation. In the classic tale as Krishna proceeds to the court for final peace negotiations before an imminent war, Draupadi, the wife of the Pandava brothers, comes to meet him. She reminds him of her disheveled hair which remains untied and of her vow that her hair will be tied only with the blood of Dussasana (one of the Kaurava brothers who publicly and wrongly humiliated her). At the climax of the epic Mahabharata war between the cousins Pandavas and Kauravas, Bheema, the second of the Pandava brothers, fights Dussasana. In the mighty encounter that follows, Bheema kills Dussasana and takes his blood to Draupadi to fulfill her vow. (Source: Indo-American Arts Council www.iaac.us) In this Battery Park version, Lord Krishna does not appear due to a missing costume. Draupadi therefore first visits Bheema. Performance is part of the Erasing Borders: Festival of Indian Dance presented by the Indo-American Arts Council. Guru Radha Mohanan and Troupe are co-presented by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.
