Shobha Korambi ( Kuchipudi) - Downtown Dance Festival - August 17, 2010 : Kuchipudi is one of the classical dance styles of India. The styles differ based on history, origin and technique. Kuchipudi originated in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Shobha Korambil dances "Natesha Kouthvam". Natesha is Lord Shiva as the Cosmic Dancer. Kouthvam is a traditional composition conventionally performed in the Bharathanatyam reportoire, and adapted here for the Kuchipudi dance form. The composition describes Nataraja's (Lord of Dance) divine dance in which all elements of nature exist. (Source: Indo-American Arts Council www.iaac.us). Leena Mohanty (Odissi) - Downtown Dance Festival - August 17, 2010 : Odissi is one of the seven classical dance styles of India. The styles differ based on history, origin and technique. Odissi originated in the state of Orissa and is one of the most popular Indian dance forms. This composition of "Govinda Damodara Stotra" by Sage Bilvamangala, also known as Lila Sukha, is the ecstatic outpouring of pure Bhaki for Lord Krishna. The composition describes the beauty of Lord Krishna and his exploits. Guru Radha Mohanan & Troupe (Kathakali) - Downtown Dance Festivial - August 17, 2010 : Kathakali Kathakali is a classical Indian dance-drama form noted for its color saturated make-up and elaborate costumes. The dramas are ancient stories of love and war from epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, which are re-lived and portrayed for their emotional and philosophic meanings. The dance dramas are based on performance traditions that trace back to the 16th century from what is now known as India’s southern state of Kerala. The stories are conveyed through a language of sounds, colors, enlarged facial and hand gestures, and action. The troupe performs "Kiratham". This episode from the Mahabharata combines humor with a subtle philosophical message of humility and overcoming ego. While in exile, Arjuna, the third of the Pandava brothers and an expert archer, is performing penance to Lord Shiva to obtain the divine arrow ‘Pasupata’. Pleased with Arjuna’s worship, Shiva disguises himself as a hunter (Kirata), along with his consort Parvati, disguised as a huntress, to test Arjuna’s skill and to subdue his pride.
