March 29, 2011 - Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts exhibition - Park Avenue Armory
Hosted by the American Folk Art Museum, "Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts" at the Park Avenue Armory, is the largest textile exhibition ever presented in New York City
The 650 displayed quilts, made in a variety of patterns and designs, span the 19th to the 21st centuries. No two are identical, and most bear the unique signatures of their makers, sewn neatly at the corners
The modern display, designed by NY based Thinc Design, organizes the quilts into tiers and spirals, ascending to the rafters in three-dimensional circular pavilions and transforming the 55,000-square-foot space of the Park Avenue Armory
The 650 quilts are owned by New York quilt collector Joanna Rose who received her first quilt, a red and white blanket with a schoolhouse design, upon the birth of her first child in 1957. She hasn't stopped collecting since and has amassed more than 1,300 quilts
When Ms. Rose, who belongs to a prominent New York real-estate family, recently turned 80, she decided to put her entire collection of red and white quilts on public display, as a gift to New York
The exhibition was in part funded by the Rose family. Their donation allowed the 6-day exhibit to be open for free to the public
Thousands of visitors, both young and old, visited the show smiling and admiring the quilts and installation
