Cinco de Mayo commemorates the day that the Mexican army, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín, held off French troops at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862
The Mexican battle was important to the U.S. since it prevented Napoleon from helping the U.S. Confederate Army. Hence, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated by Mexican Americans and the Mexico province of Puebla. It is not a general celebration in Mexico
Xochiapulco is a municipality in the Mexican state of Puebla that fought in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 and was the site of later battles with European forces.
Today, Cinco de Mayo celebrates the culture & heritage of Mexico. Note: Mexico's Independence Day is September 16
