ZviDance - Dabke - Lincoln Center Out of Doors - August 3, 2013
Founded 20 years ago by artistic director Zvi Gotheiner, ZviDance is a New York-based modern dance company. It has received critical praise and stable funding for its artistic projects, works that fearlessly refuse to be bounded to specific thematic or aesthetic dogma. The company performs frequently at home in such New York venues as the Joyce Theater, Dance Theater Workshop and Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors. ZviDance has toured across North America to festivals such as Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival and The American Dance Festival, and abroad to Germany, Poland, Russia, Israel, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador and Japan.
Photos are from ZviDance's recent performance at Lincoln Center Out of Doors on August 3, 2013. The company danced Zvi Gotheiner's Dabke. In his June 2013 review, NY Times dance critic Alastair Macaulay wrote “Dabke” strikes me as the most enchanting piece I’ve seen in a long while — a little too long for its own good at 48 minutes, and yet continually surprising, even revelatory, throughout.“Dabke,” performed barefoot, is thrilling in how it continually realizes the changing human impulse that prompts people to dance. We keep witnessing different reasons that people dance, different elements of humanity in dance. The performers are dressed simply by Reid Bartelme: T-shirts for both sexes, skirts for the four women, jeans for the men."
