Gallery 980: Manchu Robe - CHINA: THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, The Metropolitan Museum of Art - May/September 2015
This is the entrance to the Costume Institute’s lower level galleries. It showcases the influence of ancient China and specifically 15th Century Manchu robes on modern haute couture. Upon entering, you encounter a row of designs next to various ancient robes that may have influenced designers. In the center, is a video tunnel and various screens playing Bertolucci’s "The Last Emperor" film clips. At the end of the tunnel is a festival robe worn by the last emperor, Pu Yi, - when he was four years old.
